Hair is a hot topic and so is the removal of that hair. Laser hair removal is a big money making industry that involves laser schools and laser certifications. However, these treatments can be expensive. Now, several companies are offering at-home laser removal devices that have become FDA approved.
Laser hair removal has been around since the 1990s and has continued to grow in its appeal due to the promise of never having to deal with unwanted hair again. Laser hair removal is generally done by a doctor or trained aesthetician. Now, however, due to the fact that the FDA has approved at-home laser hair removal products the doctors visits are a thing of the past for many. Some question the safety as the risks associated with laser removal can be numerous, especially if you are untrained. Severe issues such as permanent scarring may occur if it is not done appropriately. As with any new technology, the future is sure to hold much additional advancement.
In the past there was technology on the market that offered laser hair removal but it was not FDA approved. Some specialists question how big of an impact these new devices might have on the hair removal market. As most people know that opt to undergo the treatment, they may have to go through several treatments in order for the effects to be permanent. With treatments ranging from 0-00 this can be rather expensive. With a system that allows you to treat yourself at home, the price can be much cheaper. If these devices really catch on in the market it could be a problem for laser schools. It could cause many technicians to lose their jobs. However, for the consumer it offers a cheaper alternative as well as the ability to take care of hair removal in the privacy of their own home. No more walking around a salon with only a robe or gown for cover. I guess for some they will need to make the decision on whether or not they can safely perform the procedure themselves – are you willing to take the risk to save some money?
What about the other products on the market? Will women choose their shaving or waxing kits or devices when they have the option of laser hair removal at home that is cost-effective and a more permanent way to keep the hair away? With the economy making people more conscious of the way they are spending we may see people spending less money on these types of cosmetic procedures in the long run. Or, we may find that over-the-counter options prove to be more popular because people won’t opt for the more expensive solutions offered.
Only time will tell if consumers will set aside their long-standing tradition of the old-school methods of shaving and waxing to opt for the new, improved at-home laser hair removal treatments. Those that can afford to keep attending their regular laser hair removal treatments will probably continue to do so. However, with the change in the economy more and more people are looking to cut out the little things. Over time we will see if cosmetic procedures are one of those things that people are willing to scale back.
